SWEETWATER-The Sweetwater Board of
Education took time during its September Board meeting to recognize
the city school system's new security officers.
For years, the school system has had
one school resource officer (SRO), David Lewellan. But after the
December 2012 mass school shooting in Connecticut, the city system
worked with the Sweetwater Police Department to devise a
cost-effective plan to put an officer in each school.
"These folks have done a fine job so
far," Lewellan said.
In other business, Sweetwater
Elementary School Principal Diana Howard gave a state-of-the-school
She praised her staff and outlined a
number of initiatives at SES.
"They are a high-quality faculty and
staff that works together," Howard said.
Howard said the school is preparing for
the new online PARCC assessment that goes with the new Common Core
standards beginning 2014-15. It will replace the current TCAP tests.
SES participates in the Sweetwater
Kiwanis Club's Bringing up Grades (BUG) program to reward students
who bring up their grades and has other programs for gifted students.
