MADISONVILLE-The Monroe County
School System is "nit" picky....when it comes to lice, that is.
During the School Board meeting on Thursday night, School Health Supervisor Sonia Hardin asked
the board to approve an updated lice procedure.
system follows the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for its lice
procedure. Under the new procedure, students diagnosed with live head lice do not need to be sent
home early from school. Parents will be notified of the findings of live lice and informed of the
need to obtain treatment before returning the student to school.
The parents must provide proof of treatment when the student returns. Proof of treatment may
be an OTC medication box, an empty bottle or prescription label. If the student returns the next
day without proof of treatment, the parents will be contacted by phone to pick up the student.
Students may be given a one-day medical excuse by the school
nurse for treatment of each incident up to three times per year. Parent excuses may be used for
additional days, if they are available.
Despite concerns, the
board approved the procedure to "give it a chance to work."
Hardin also asked the board to approve a memorandum of understanding with Hiwassee Mental
Health Services. Under the memorandum of understanding, outside providers come into the schools to
offer additional counseling services to students. Currently, two schools--Vonore Elementary and
Vonore Middle--are not being served with extra services. The memorandum will provide both schools
with the service at no cost to the school system.
