MADISONVILLE-It's back to the drawing
board for a new Monroe County Jail after a plan to buy property on
New Highway 68 fell through.
Monroe County Mayor Tim Yates said the
deal fell through after the Jail Committee learned the owners of the
property wanted to sell them a part of the land that had very little
"It would have went straight back
with only about 300 feet of road frontage," Yates said. "The
committee throught the price they were asking ($500,000 for 20 acres) was too much for property that had so little road access."
Yates said the owners of the property
had always asked the same price and he understood they had made a
promise to the late owner of the property they wouldn’t accept
"There's no hard feelings about
this," Yates said. "Sometimes deals just can't be worked out."
Now the county is in back up and punt
mode, but the solution may lie right next door.
