MADISONVILLE-The Monroe County
government is has run the local airport since April 1 and will do so
the next couple of months at least.
But the county still has at least one
suitor who would like to take over managing the airport for the
Adrian F. van Zyl from AVZ Aviation,
based locally at McGhee Tyson Airport in Alcoa, presented a proposal
to take over running the airport to the County Commission at its July
"We are looking for a business
opportunity," van Zly said.
He also said his company could run the
airport while turning over about $29,000 in revenue to the county
The county's appointed Airport
Committee has reveiwed proposals from bidders to run the airport in
recent weeks, but van Zly said he wanted the full County Commission
to see his proposal.
Van Zly said his company could grow the
airport and would use local employees. He said to really advance the
airport for coporate jets to land out, the current runway would need
to be expanded from the current 3,500 feet to at least 5,000 feet.
