SWEETWATER-The Sweetwater Board of
Education has a new chairman.
Make that chairwoman.
Longtime School Board member Janie
Dacus was voted chairwoman Monday night. Dacus has previously served
as vice chairwoman for years while Richard Rowe has been chairman for
many years. Rowe will now serve as vice chair.
Dacus and fellow board member Bennie
Moser were unopposed in the June election. Rowe, Letha Oggs and Dr.
John Fox do not face re-election for School Board until 2015.
It was a quiet mid-summer School Board
Director of Schools Dr. Melanie Miller
updated the board on various projects.
She said the school system's
maintenance team has done an excellent job this summer carrying out
the annual summer maintenance chores and projects. Summer school was
a success as well, the director said.
"We had an excellent summer school," Miller said of the June summer school classes.
Miller said the board must decide what
to do with the white house next to Sweetwater Elementary School. The
school system used to use that house for office space until the new
administration building opened earlier this year.
The School Board must also decide what
to do with one of the small school buses it has that according to
state law, will have to go out of service Jan. 1.
The bus only has about 20,000 miles on
it, but by state law, is considered too old to put on the road for a
public school system.
