MADISONVILLE-Has the County Commission
settled on a site for a new Jail?
Commissioners voted 7-1 Tuesday night
to pursue purchasing the Atkins property as the jail site. The
property is on New Highway 68 in Madisonville going toward Tellico
The commissioner's decision came after
the Jail Committee, which is made up of county commissioners,
judicial and other county officials, studied a cost analysis from
The analysis compared cost projections
of building on the Martin property, the Atkins property, adding to
the current jail downtown or building an all-new facility downtown.
According to Cope's study, the least
expensive option for a 115,000-square-foot jail with 366 beds is
building on the Atkins property not only when it comes to land
purchase price, site preparation and building cost added all
together, but also when it comes to annual staffing costs and annual
maintenance and utilities projected out over 30 years.
