MADISONVILLE-It's not often something
ends almost exactly a number of years after it began. But considering
her heritage, Hiwassee College was the only place fate could have
landed Beth Scruggs.
Scruggs has held several positions at
the school since she started there in August 1973, from home
economics teacher her first year to vice president for academic and
students affairs as she prepares to leave.
"Hiwassee College has really been a
family affair for me," Scruggs said. "My brother, sister and my
kids were all students here. My father and grandfather came to the
school in 1945 and I basically grew up on campus. My father is Glenn
Rapking, who ran Hiwassee furniture for years and helped build the
houses on campus."
Scruggs started off teaching in 1973,
acquired her master's degree in 1975 and has held several titles in
the years since. Still, despite all these ties, Hiwassee College was
not in her original plans.
"My husband was a pharmacist and had
a job in Alabama," Scruggs said. "But we ended up back here and
my life was set."
As she had, Scruggs' kids grew up on
the Hiwassee campus.
"They could run around and not get into any
trouble," she said. "Everybody always looked out for them, so I
knew they were all right."
Scruggs gave Hiwassee her all over the
years, telling potential faculty members that if she could get them
for two years, they'd be hooked.
"I'd tell them about the Hiwassee
spirit," she said, "and how you can get caught up in it."
