MADISONVILLE-Enrollment numbers are
increasing for Madisonville Middle School.
When enrollment numbers increase,
additional teachers must be added to meet the required teacher/pupil
ratio numbers mandated by the state, Director of Schools Mike Lowry
explained to the Monroe County Board of Education on Thursday night.
"Numbers indicate that we have to
have more teachers at Madisonville Middle because of the growth at
the school for next year," he said. "Anytime there's a growth,
you had to add a new teaching position."
But while the school system must add
teaching positions at the school due to an increase, other schools' enrollment numbers are down.
"We've dropped one teacher from
Madisonville Intermediate and one at Madisonville Primary," said
Adding new teachers creates another
problem, however: where to put the classrooms.
"The issue is, we don't have a place
to put them," Lowry explained.
Maintenance Supervisor Charles
Underwood has created a plan to renovate a dressing room at the
school into two classrooms for the upcoming school year. The
estimated total cost of the renovation would be $35,000.
In comparison, adding portal classrooms
would cost at least $70,000 plus setup.
Lowry stressed the importance of the
"The money overall will be a wash," he said. "But it's an investment overall that we have to make to
allow for the growth."
The board agreed unanimously to move
forward with the renovation project, which will begin as soon as
possible in order to be completed by the beginning of the school
Underwood hopes to split the cost of
the project between the current budget and the 2013-2014 budget,
which will begin in July.
