MADISONVILLE-No matter how many ways
you look at it, 2 + 2 will always equal 4. It won't equal 5, no
matter how much you want it to. Monroe County is running into the
same problem when it comes to a new jail.
The county commission is almost evenly
split over whether the new jail should be built in a new location or
erected at its current location. The county's jail committee once
recommended buying property on New Highway 68, at the edge of
Madisonville going toward Tellico known as the Atkins' Farm.
The county commission couldn't bring
itself to pull the trigger and asked for a price comparison between
building in a new location and rebuilding in the downtown area.
At least half the commission probably
didn't like what architect Grant Tharp of Cope Architecture told
them last week.
Tharp said not only is the Atkins Farm
the cheapest option for a new jail, it is much cheaper than building
on the same location.
This didn't seem to sway four members
of the county commission (the jail committee is made up of the
commission plus several others) as when Commissioner Marty Allen made
a motion to once again buy the Atkins property, commissioners Roger
Thomas, Bill Shadden, Harold Hawkins and Bill Bivins all passed.
Commissioners Wanda Alexander, Allen, Richard Kirkland Benny Moser
and Judy Lee all voted to look into purchasing the land. County Mayor
Tim Yates also voted to look into buying the property.
Bivins in particular seems determined
to keep the jail downtown, saying they could drop half of the
property they needed to buy and instead take over the general
sessions court building.
"I just want to do all we can to save
taxpayer money," Bivins said.
