KNOXVILLE — Tellico Plains' Bryce Choate finished in second place in the boys' 800-meter run at the Class AA track sectionals Tuesday at Christian Academy of Knoxville.
That finish, with a time of 1:59.41, put the sophomore Bear in one of the two automatic qualification spots for the TSSAA state meet in Murfreesboro from the East sectionals.
Choate will run the preliminaries for his event Thursday and if he makes it out of the heats, he will run the final on Friday.
Sweetwater's Samuel Hawkins recorded personal bests in both his 1600m (4:40.69) and 3200m (10:04.57) runs, good for fourth place in both events.
However, results from other sectionals pushed the Wildcat senior out of a spot at state.
Tellico junior Casey Hamby placed sixth in the boys' 110m hurdles with a time of 18.25 seconds. Lady Bear sophomore Morgan Payne finished in sixth in the girls' 300m hurdles with a time of 51.53 seconds.
Sequoyah finished eighth in the girls 4x400m relay with the team of sophomores Courtney Cartwright, Kaitlin Cartwright and Danielle March and senior Charrissa Cardin.
Cardin finished ninth in the girls' 200m in 28.12 seconds, and March also placed ninth in the 400m with a time of 1:05.74.
