A new principal has been named for
Vonore Elementary School.
Mark Pickel, a former administrator in
Polk County and Athens City Schools, is returning to where he began
his education career. Pickel served as a teacher at Sequoyah High
School in 1995 and 1996.
"I started my career in Monroe County
and I always wanted to be able to come back and serve the community," said Pickel, who will be moving to Vonore soon. "I saw the
opportunity to come back and I'm fortunate to be hired into the
position of principal at Vonore Elementary."
The principal position at the school
became open after Monroe County Director of Schools Mike Lowry told
Priscilla Gregory in May that she would not return to her role in the
upcoming school year.
Lowry hired Pickel, 45, on Monday
"Mr. Pickel is more of a data driven
administrator," said Lowry. "Someone with his experience,
knowledge and background has a lot to contribute and he will be an
access to us both in Monroe County and at Vonore Elementary School."
When asked if he was looking forward to
the new challenge, Pickel responded quickly: "Absolutely."
