MADISONVILLE-It's the most visible
thing in Madisonville, but it still took several hours for anyone to
realize the giant flag at the Veteran's Memorial was missing
Two days later, Madisonville Police
found the flag in a house on Highway 360 near Tellico Plains after a
tip led them in that direction.
"Someone came forward," said
Madisonville Police Chief Gregg Breeden, "and we were able to get
going in the right direction."
Details are scarce as police put the
case together. No one has been charged yet, but an arrest is
"The flag is pretty dirty and won't
be used again," Breeden said. "It doesn't appear to have been
vandalized or defaced in any way, but we didn't lay it out
completely to look. It had been wadded up."
It took several hours for anyone to
notice the flag was missing Tuesday.
"It's not really that surprising
that no one missed it for a while," Breeden said. "It comes down
for maintenance on a regular basis and that's what everyone thought
was happening. But after making calls and looking around, we realized
about 4 p.m. Tuesday it was gone."
