TELLICO PLAINS-Gary Tucker just
could not walk away, in the end.
Weeks after initially deciding
to retire, the Tellico Plains High School girls basketball coach of 40 years retook his job.
"It was my love for the game," said Tucker, who currently sits at 628
wins. "And my administrators were very encouraging, and I guess I just decided that I wanted to do
it again. The girls were special too, and that made it really hard to give up."
Tucker had met with the girls' basketball team in the middle of the week
and told the Lady Bears he would return.
"They didn't say a
whole lot to me, but I had a good feeling that they were glad," he said.
Tucker will likely receive a 100-day contract to teach part time in
addition to reclaiming his coaching duties. It is unknown at this time whether his subject at TPHS
will be senior English, as it has been for a long time.

Tucker's 41st season as coach should begin with high expectations. The
Lady Bears graduate only one senior from the 2013 team, Tori McMinn, and return a core that
includes District 3-A Most Valuable Player Jasmine Harris and other key players such as McKinley
Dalton, Brayden Garren and Brittany Kirkland.
"I think the
experience from last season is going to help us a lot this year, so that's exciting," Tucker
