TELLICO PLAINS-The price of everything
is going up these days, even garbage.
Residents in the town of Tellico Plains
can soon expect a 25-cent increase on their garbage rates. Under
contract until 2015, Waste Management has increased its company price
by 22 cents per unit.
"Our city attorney looked over the
contract and recommended that we consider canceling their contract
when it expires and reopening it for bids to see if we can't get it
cheaper for our citizens," Mayor Patrick Hawkins told the board on
There have been three garbage rate
increases, said Hawkins, since he's been mayor.
"We've kept it so we're just breaking
even right now," said Hawkins. "We're not making a profit, just
paying the company."
The town council decided on a 25-cent
increase across the board to offset any unexpected costs.
"I know none of us like to increase
anything, but if we start eating it, we'll go in the hole real fast," said Hawkins. "We don't have a choice but to pass it, or the town's
going to have to eat it. Either way, we're going to have to pay it."
