TELLICO PLAINS - Tellico Plains' softball team did all the right things for seven innings against an opponent known for its high scoring.
The Lady Bears, behind the pitching of Katie Jo Ellis, held Polk County - a team that has scored double-digit runs in five of its nine wins, including against Sweetwater and Sequoyah - to one run and a 1-1 tie to force extra innings, where they finally fell 4-2 in the eighth.
"We make solid plays in our infield and our pitching’s pretty solid," said Tellico assistant coach Don Swanson.
Tellico drew first blood in the bottom of the first when Jasmine Harris led off with a double, then Brayden Garren singled to left field to send Harris home. The Lady Wildcats countered in the third when Kaitlyn Williams came running home on a passed ball, but Rachel Sutton caught a line drive two batters later to halt Polk's continuing threat with runners on second and third, and the game stayed tied 1-1 through seven.
Lydia Triplett started the eighth inning for the Lady Wildcats with a sacrifice grounder to advance Williams, who started the inning on second base as part of the TSSAA extra inning rules. Lily Cuzzort sent Williams home with an RBI single toward right center, then went to second on interference. Hannah Triplett hit a ribbie to get Cuzzort home, and Jordan Triplett then doubled to left field to send Hannah home and extend the margin to 4-1.
To start Tellico's part of the eighth, Jessi Watson advanced Hannah Burrell to third with her own sacrifice grounder to shortstop. Harris then hit an RBI single to get the Lady Bears their second run, but a grounder and a lineout ended their chances.
Tellico would return to District 3-A play Tuesday, hosting Midway.
