East Tennessee is not in the tornado belt that includes the Plains States and does not normally have as many tornadoes as even West and Middle Tennessee do.
However, the number of tornadoes the
region has experienced the last few years should dispel any lingering
myths that our area is somehow immune to tornadoes because of
mountains. Tornadoes have struck Monroe County the last four years,
2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. During the massive April 27, 2011
outbreak, at least eight tornadoes touched down in Monroe County,
according to the database at the National Weather Service in
Morristown. Just a year ago, a tornado heavily damaged Tellico Plains
and the surrounding area.
With spring around the corner, the
season in which tornadoes are most likely to occur is nearly here. So
