TELLICO PLAINS-After moving forward
with the first vote on an ordinance to change overtime rules in the
Police Department, the Tellico Plains City Council addressed another
issue within that department.
Mayor Patrick Hawkins recommended the
board make an amendment to the Police Department's standard operating
procedure manual's recording devices section.
"With editing that's out there,
someone can edit a video to say whatever," said Hawkins.
Currently, police officers do not have
to inform city employees or board members that they are being
recorded. Hawkins suggested amending that section to where officers
have to inform employees and board members if they are recording a
conversation.
"Some of us have some targets on us," said Hawkins. "This would give us a bit of protection. This way it
would allow someone to walk away from a conversation they didn't want
to have."
Hamilton called the situation "dangerous," and Alderwoman Sherri Raby agreed.
"I don't mind being recorded if I
know it," said Raby. See full story in the Sunday, Dec. 9, edition of The Advocate & Democrat.
