After a tough loss against the Polk
County Wildcats, the Sequoyah Chiefs will try and rebound on the road
as they'll face the Loudon Redskins on Friday.
The Chiefs are 6-2, and 2-1 in 5-AA so
a win on the road will do a lot towards where they are seeded in the
playoffs. In 2011, the Redskins won a thriller at Sequoyah by the
final of 10-0. Now the offense for the Redskins hasn't improved too
much, but the defense is just as formidable.
After giving up a touchdown two
minutes into the Sweetwater game, the Redskins' defense shut down
the Wildcats the rest of the way for an 8-7 win.
Dominating performances on defense have
caused the Chiefs' offense to struggle. It hasn't been a scoring
issue for the Chiefs, but rather a turnover situation. In the loss to
Lenoir City, the Chiefs turned the ball over three times. In last
week's game the turnover mark was six. Sequoyah was in both of
those contests, but turnovers cost them a chance at a win. Protecting
the ball needs to be high on the Chiefs' priority list, and I'm
sure it is.
Loudon needs this win almost as much as
Sequoyah. At 4-4 and 2-2 in 4-AA, the Redskins want a victory to feel
more comfortable heading into the last game of the season. That's
what makes this matchup so compelling for both teams. The momentum
that both could gain from this win could prove invaluable as this
season comes to a close. Brett King, Garret Dalton, and Rueben
Abernathy will all need to play big in the passing game. After
Dalton's stellar start to 2012, he has fallen off. Not because of
talent, but because he has faced double and sometimes even triple
coverage since his electric start. If he can get open, he'll make
plays. Abernathy has emerged as a formidable target for King. If he
can get open in the middle and have the linebackers move up, it could
create some shots for Dalton in the secondary.
On defense, Caleb
Minor has been on a tear as of late. Now that the linebacking law
firm of Huffman,Tilley and Minor are back together, this defense
looks scary. Last week, Brian Tilley didn't miss a beat after four
weeks off. Blake Huffman, Alex Stakely and Luke Knott must make
plays. Loudon will try and beat the Chiefs up front and pound the
football. This is going to be a very physical game, but the Chiefs
should come back with a win.
