A Tellico Plains man died Thursday afternoon after falling 40 feet from
a boom lift in the backyard of a County Road 575 residence in Englewood where he was completing a
construction project. Douglas Gourley, 37, was transported from
the scene just after 5 p.m. but was pronounced dead at Athens Regional Medical Center from multiple
traumas he sustained in the accident. Englewood Rural Fire Chief
Bill Roach reported to the McMinn County Sheriff's Department that the victim had fallen off the
boom lift and then it turned over in the backyard of 154 County Road 575. Nate Wright, owner of Done Wright Contractors, reported to police that
the lift turned over while his workers were taking the plastic off of windows on a new addition
they had just constructed on the home. The Tennessee
Occupational Safety & Health Administration was called to the scene to investigate. Hydraulic fluid leaking from the tractor was cleaned up by McMinn County
HazMat.
