Two men, who will forever be remembered in the Sequoyah community, were honored Friday night.

The late Lcpl. Marine Frankie Watson and longtime sports writer and mailman, the late John Howard Taylor were paid homage too at the game.

Watson's #7 jersey was retired and his story and pictures will be in our Wednesday edition.

The action on the field was nothing compared to the ceremonies. Sequoyah scored on the opening drive of the contest, but never could retain the lead, as they lost 38-13.

This game was really a barometer for both teams. Lenoir City came in with a 2-0 record and a number four ranking in 5A by the Tennessee AP poll.

In the Chiefs first possession there were two penalties. That set the tone for what was to come, but you wouldn't now it because of what happened next. Rueben Abernathy split three Panther defenders, whilst juggling the football. Abernathy quickly found a grasp on the dart thrown by Brett King and took it 85 yards to the house. Chiefs led 7-0.

From that point the Panthers would outscore the Chiefs 38-6.

The Panthers responding drive netted them in field goal range, and Dakota Vincil brought us to 7-3. King's screen pass was intercepted by Jake Noah two plays later. Jordan Hall marched into the end-zone and made the score 10-7.

Hall then threw a beautiful fade from the right hash line to the left corner of the end-zone where a leaping Jaylond Woods could be found. Panthers on top 17-7 in the second quarter. The Chiefs really struggled to find any offensive consistency. The Panthers' pounced on the overworked Chief defense.

Sequoyah committed four turnovers which proved to be costly. A touchdown on the ground and through the air for the Panthers made the score 31-7 at the half. The last score was solid slant strike to Ryan Weaver.

A combination of bad breaks, and miscues led to a tough loss against a good team. Sequoyah was only out scored 7-6 in the second half after a Drew Carson TD run and a Ryan Weaver interception return for a score. Abernathy led the way on offense for the Chiefs with 6 catches and well over 100 yards recieving. Evan Torbett had some nice grabs as well.

Defensively the Chiefs were just on the field entirely too much. Thomas Spradlin, Blake Huffman, and Forrest McKane were just some of the standouts on defense. Ben Hall also had a sack, while Matt Gletty had an acrobatic pass break up.

It should be noted that just before the half there was an injury to a Chiefs defender. K.C. Deherrera was attempting to stop Woods but wound up on the bottom of the pile. He was carted off but waved to the crowd upon leaving.

All in all a tough night for the Chiefs football team. They'll take their 3-1 record into Homecoming night against Cumberland County.
