SWEETWATER-Sweetwater handled oliver
Springs 29-6 Friday night.
The Wildcats got on the board first, on
their opening drive of the game, with a 70-yard drive capped off by a
touchdown pass and catch from Andrew Barr to Zack Neil. The extra
point was blocked and Sweetwater led 6-0 at 8:44 in the first
quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter, the Wildcat defense recovered a
fumble on the Oliver Springs 26-yard line.
The offense was unable to get it in the
end zone so Garrett Zickgraf came in and added a 24-yard field goal
increasing Sweetwater's lead to 9-0.
A couple possessions later, Sweetwater
got the football on their own 29-yard line and proceeded to march
down the field 71 yards and scored on a Jordan McGaughey 14-yard run
with 3:42 left in the half.
Sweetwater attempted a two point
conversion and failed making the score 15-0. Oliver Springs returned
the ensuing kickoff down to the Sweetwater 37-yard line. This set up
the Bobcats only score of the night, which came a couple plays later
on a 35-yard Brandon Buck touchdown pass to John Simms.
The extra point try was no good but
Oliver Springs had got back in the game at 15-6. Sweetwater started
the next drive at their own 33 yard line with 2 minutes left in the
half.
A Jordan McGauhey touchdown run with :20 seconds left on the clock and the extra point by Zickgraf, the
Wildcats led 22-6 at the break.
Sweetwater took the opening kick of the
second half and looked for the knockout blow. They put the Bobcats
away after their 66-yard drive ended with another touchdown run by
Jordan McGaughey that covered 26 yards at 9:00 to go in the 3rd
quarter.
The Sweetwater defense held Oliver
Springs to just 88 yards rushing, forced 3 turnovers, and collected 6
sacks on the night. ZackNeil led the defense with 3.5 sacks and a
forced fumble. Neil also had a touchdown reception on offense.
Meanwhile, the Sweetwater offense
racked up 360 yards on the ground. Jordan McGaughey accounted for 249 of those
yards on 32 carries and 3 touchdowns. With the 29-6 win, Sweetwater starts
the season 4-0 for the first time in ten years. More photos will be
in Wednesday's edition.
