Lena Ruth Elrod
Burris, 79, of Athens, died Wednesday morning, June 5, at Sweetwater Hospital. A lifelong resident
of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Bruce and Fairadell Bohannon Elrod and was
also preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Burris Jr.; a sister, Phyllis E. Womac; and a
special friend and caretaker, Jane Redfern. She was a member of East Athens Baptist Church.
Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law-Dianne and John Ridgell of
Son and daughter-in-law-Bill and Lisa Burris of Niota;
Three granddaughters-Amy Ridgell, Christie Ridgell and Kelby Burris
and her fiance’ Matthew Layman;
One great-grandson-Dylan Ridgell;
Brother-in-law-Charles Womac of Athens; and
Nephew-Tony Womac of Athens.
The family wishes to
give a special thanks to Guardian Home Health Care and Sweetwater Nursing Facility; special

A funeral service will be conducted at 8 pm, Thursday, June
6, in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glen Gregg and Rev. John Hathcock officiating.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Friday at McMinn Memory Gardens with Dr. Frank Crawford
officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home
prior to the service.
