Glen E. Thornton

Glen E. Thornton of Athens passed away, Tuesday, Dec. 18, at
Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. A native and lifelong resident of Athens, he
was a son of the late Hubert Columbus and Elizabeth Barnes Thornton. He was a
teacher in the Monroe County School System at Rural Vale Elementary School and
Sweetwater High School, where he was the Key Club advisor and helped with
the Math Competition. He managed both movie theatres in Athens for many
years and had a lawn service.
He was 62.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Michael Dewayne Thornton
and Billy Eugene Thornton and one sister, Lois Gaut.
Survivors include: four sisters and brothers-in-law-Helen
and Ted Greene of Riceville; Lucille and Lee Henry of Athens; Wanda and
Maurice McKinney of Athens; and Gail and Spencer Roper of Riceville;
Brothers and sisters-in-law-Larry and Wilma Thornton of
Athens; and Kenneth "Kenny" and Rita Thornton of Etowah;
Several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, in the
chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Kenny Thornton officiating. Graveside
services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at McMinn Memory Gardens. The
family will receive friends from Thursday from 6-8 p.m. prior to the service. Laycock-Hobbs
Funeral Home, Athens, in charge of arrangements.
